Lee Hae-chan "Party and government must discuss expanding social safety nets... Preparing for 'Post-Corona'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Lee Hae-chan, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged that the expansion of the social safety net be reflected in future party-government consultations. Within the Democratic Party, the introduction of a nationwide employment insurance system is being discussed.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 6th, Lee said, "From today, quarantine as a part of daily life has begun," adding, "Many daily routines that were halted during the national crisis are resuming, but we can never return to pre-COVID-19 life until a vaccine is available."
He continued, "Looking at the COVID-19 situation so far, the National Health Insurance system and various social safety nets have greatly helped overcome COVID-19," and said, "In the 'post-COVID' era, more important social systems must be supported to overcome the crisis. I hope this point will be fully reflected in various future consultations between the party and government."
He also emphasized, "The 21st National Assembly must become a completely new assembly. It must be a working assembly," and added, "The Democratic Party will prepare from now on so that the newly formed floor leadership can work in earnest from the first session of the National Assembly."
Lee also announced that the merger with the Together Citizens' Party will be promptly pursued. He said, "We are preparing a party-wide vote for the merger with the Citizens' Party," and added, "We will complete the merger process by finalizing the floor organization through the Central Committee and joint meetings of the two parties."
He further stressed, "There seem to be various discussions about forming a negotiation group in the Future Korea Party, but I earnestly ask that such things do not happen so that the National Assembly can operate normally."
