Samsung ENG Secures Additional $60 Million Contract for Refinery Project in Mexico
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Engineering is raising expectations for the transition to the main EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contract for phase 2 by signing an additional contract worth 60 million dollars (approximately 70 billion KRW) for an ongoing refinery project in Mexico.
Samsung Engineering announced on the 6th that it signed a pile construction contract for the Dos Bocas Refinery Project in Mexico on the 4th (local time).
Pile construction refers to the work of driving piles into leveled ground that can bear the load of heavy plant units. This contract covers pile work for some plant units whose designs have been completed, prioritizing construction for about 4,500 out of 10,500 piles. With this contract, the cumulative contract amount has increased to 310 million dollars.
This project is being carried out by Samsung Engineering's Mexico branch, which won the order last August from PTI-ID, a subsidiary of the Mexican state-owned oil company PEMEX. The project consists of phase 1, which includes basic design and some detailed design, and phase 2, which covers the remaining detailed design, procurement, construction, and commissioning. Samsung Engineering is currently completing phase 1 work.
This contract further raises expectations for the main EPC contract for phase 2. The project is a national initiative strongly supported by the Mexican president, who has ordered its smooth progress regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic. This pile construction contract was separately ordered as part of phase 2 to accelerate the project’s progress, making it possible to expect the transition to phase 2 within this year.
