[Asia Economy Reporters Seokjin Choi and Seungyoon Song] Wang Gichun (32), a former national judo athlete who won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a minor.
Wang, a leading figure in Korean judo who operated a gym bearing his name and was active as a YouTuber, has shocked the public with news of his arrest, and on the morning of the 3rd, his name ranked first in real-time search terms.
According to the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency, an arrest warrant for Wang was issued on the 1st.
The complaint against Wang was filed with the Daegu Suseong Police Station on March 16, and the Daegu Police Agency has been investigating the case since then.
A Daegu Police Agency official stated, "The arrest warrant was issued following proper legal procedures, and since the case is under investigation, it is difficult to provide detailed information."
The police plan to conduct further investigations on Wang while he is in custody and transfer the case to the prosecution next week.
Wang, originally from Jeongeup, Jeonbuk, rose to prominence as a leading figure in Korean judo by winning a silver medal in the men's 73kg category at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics after not winning the final selection tournament.
After retiring from the national team, Wang opened a judo gym in Daegu and worked as a sports instructor for community sports, also working as a BJ on AfreecaTV and YouTube.
The "Wang Gichun Ganji Judo Gym," which opened in Suseong-gu, Daegu in 2016, has now expanded to six locations nationwide.
