Thanks to the voluntary participation of residents and active promotion, food waste was reduced by 4% compared to the same period in 2018.
This food waste reduction competition was conducted targeting a total of 121 apartment complexes with 80 or more households located in Seongdong-gu.
The amount of waste discharged was confirmed through the collection of payment certificates for complexes implementing volume-based waste disposal by complex, and for households with RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) volume-based waste meters installed, the discharge amount was directly recorded.
On the 23rd of last month, the district selected 10 complexes with the highest reduction rates relative to the number of households among the participating complexes as excellent complexes.
The apartment complex that won the grand prize was Kumho 1st Prugio (Geumho 2·3-ga-dong), which showed the highest reduction rate by reducing food waste by 35.4% compared to the same period.
This figure is more than 16 times the average reduction rate of 2.2% for the apartment complex.
Next, the complexes awarded the excellence prize were Hawang Kumho Bestville, Sageun Jungang Heights, and Hawang Geukdong Mirage, totaling three complexes, and the encouragement prize was awarded to Seongsu Hanyang Hyundai, Seongsu Hyundai Green, Seongsu Sinjangmi, Seongsu Hangang Hanshin, Seongsu Daerim Roseville, and Majang Daeseong Unid Apartments.
The grand prize, excellence prize, and encouragement prize will be awarded with food waste bins and recycling separation stands worth 1,000,000 KRW, 500,000 KRW, and 250,000 KRW respectively as prizes.
A district official stated, "Since 2014, we have continuously conducted public awareness activities to reduce household waste every year, and it seems that the public's awareness has greatly improved." He added, "In particular, the reduction rate of apartment complexes with RFID volume-based waste meters introduced since November 2018 is high, and we plan to continuously expand their installation in the future."
