[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Fire Agency announced on the 1st at 8:04 PM that the wildfire that occurred in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do was fully extinguished by 8 AM on the 2nd, and the nationwide fire mobilization order was downgraded from Level 2 (Response Level 3) to Level 1, with efforts now focused on extinguishing remaining embers.
Accordingly, 57 fire trucks and 150 personnel dispatched from six cities and provinces adjacent to Gangwon-do, including Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Gyeonggi, Chungbuk, and Chungnam, are continuing to extinguish the remaining embers alongside Gangwon Fire Department, while the rest are returning to their respective jurisdictions.
Gangwon Fire Department is also focusing on extinguishing remaining embers with supporting firefighting forces until the afternoon. The number of fire trucks and personnel dispatched from the Yeongseo region of Gangwon was adjusted from 73 trucks and 208 personnel to 23 trucks and 61 personnel. Even after the remaining embers are extinguished, appropriate firefighting forces will be maintained under the command of the Goseong Fire Station Chief to monitor for flare-ups.
President Moon Jae-in called Fire Agency Commissioner Jung Moon-ho through the Crisis Management Center Chief of the Blue House National Security Office to encourage the firefighting personnel who worked overnight to extinguish the wildfire.
Commissioner Jung Moon-ho stated that although the main fire has been extinguished, since a dry weather advisory is in effect and winds may blow, he urged the Gangwon Fire Headquarters Chief to ensure thorough extinguishing of remaining embers and monitoring for flare-ups.
Meanwhile, about 5,000 personnel including those from the Fire Agency, Korea Forest Service, police, military, and related government officials, along with approximately 500 fire vehicles and 39 helicopters, were mobilized to extinguish the main fire in 11 hours and 56 minutes.
