Gangdong-gu Promotes Adoption of Abandoned Animals by Launching YouTube Channel...Provides Videos on Abandoned Animals, Useful Pet Health Tips, and Pettoons
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) provides video information of abandoned animals under protection in the district to residents through its YouTube channel.
The YouTube channel was launched to normalize the abandoned animal adoption project, which was suspended due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, and to offer useful information and emotional stability to residents interested in pets.
Since the spread of COVID-19, inquiries about adopting abandoned animals have sharply decreased from 133 cases in January to 76 in February, 23 in March, and 10 in April, resulting in poor adoption performance.
The initiative is carried out through a business agreement between Gangdong-gu and Koentep, a local pet community platform company, via the YouTube channel and a mobile-exclusive pet platform.
In addition to video information on abandoned animals, useful health knowledge for pet owners, location-based local information, and animal webtoons (Pettoons) are also provided.
The video information can be easily accessed by searching for ‘TEP TV (The World Seen by Pets)’ on YouTube or by installing the ‘TEPTEP (TEPTEP, Pet Neighborhood Community Platform)’ application from the Google Play Store.
Currently, video content featuring five abandoned dogs protected at the Gangdong-gu Abandoned Animal Adoption Center (Ribbon) is posted. Support for iPhone (App Store) is planned in the future.
TEPTEP, launched by Koentep, is a pet platform created to realize a healthy pet culture that respects pets from an equal perspective with humans. The name is derived by reversing the word PET, emphasizing viewing the world from the pet’s point of view.
The district focuses on promoting the YouTube channel subscription conveniently by sending notification texts to residents who have used the Ribbon Center. It plans to continuously post educational and health information video content for pet owners so they can overcome inconveniences caused by COVID-19 and obtain useful information.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “As the COVID-19 pandemic swept through society, residents’ interest in abandoned animals decreased, and adoption inquiries stopped abruptly. Through the launch of the abandoned animal YouTube channel, we hope residents will show great interest and participation so that animals eagerly waiting to meet their families can find a home as soon as possible.”
The abandoned animal adoption center ‘Ribbon,’ operated by Gangdong-gu to prevent euthanasia of abandoned animals, promote resident adoption, and spread a culture of respect for life in the community, will reopen on May 6, when social distancing ends, after a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 situation.
