Young Artists Sell Their Works Directly at Seoul Arts Center 'Cheongnyeon Art Shop'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The Seoul Arts Center is launching the 'Youth Art Shop' to support young emerging artists in Korea. The Youth Art Shop is a store where young Korean artists take turns directly selling their own works.
In May, six artists from various genres including painting, sculpture, and printmaking (Jeong Won, Jo Seol-hwa, Jeong Hye-ryeon, Heo Ji-hyun, Siwon, and Lee Min-ji) were selected through a public contest as Youth Art Shop artists. They will be divided into three teams and introduce and sell their works for one week each from the 5th to the 26th in a space set up at the entrance of the Hangaram Art Museum's first floor.
Visitors can hear directly from the artists about the meaning and production process of the works and purchase pieces at reasonable prices ranging from 100,000 to 600,000 KRW. The Seoul Arts Center provides the sales space free of charge, and all proceeds from sales go directly to the artists.
The Hangaram Art Museum attracts 400,000 to 500,000 visitors annually and is easily accessible. Visitors who come to view exhibitions can casually see works imbued with fresh ideas, talk with the artists, and easily purchase pieces they like.
In the reality where the entire art market has been depressed since the COVID-19 pandemic and opportunities for young artists are increasingly limited, the Youth Art Shop is expected to help young artists establish themselves in the art world by introducing them to the public and facilitating the sale of their works. It is also expected to provide general citizens with an easy and comfortable opportunity to access the artworks of young artists.
