[Summary] Banks Closed on 'Geunroja-ui Nal' (Labor Day), Courier Services Operating Normally
Non-Statutory Holidays
Most Employees at Financial Companies Subject to Labor Standards Act Have Day Off
Postal Service Delivery Operations Conducted Only in Some Areas with Consignment Contracts
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Lim Juhyung] Ahead of "Labor Day" on May 1, attention is focused on the holiday schedule for banks, government offices, hospitals, and delivery services. This day is a statutory holiday but not a legal public holiday, so jobs not subject to the Labor Standards Act are, in principle, not required to close.
Employees of financial institutions subject to the Labor Standards Act mostly take the day off. General commercial banks, securities firms, and insurance companies all close simultaneously, and the stock market is also closed.
However, some special business branches such as bank branches inside courts, prosecutors' offices, city halls, airports, and the Seoul Station currency exchange operate normally.
On the other hand, public officials are not subject to the Labor Standards Act, so government ministries, government offices, and public institutions plan to operate normally. However, some local governments may provide special leave for Labor Day, so it is advisable to check before visiting.
In the case of medical institutions, large hospitals such as university hospitals and general hospitals mostly provide normal medical services, but some may occasionally close. This can be checked by searching for medical service availability on the "Emergency Medical Portal" website. Private clinics and pharmacies are classified as self-employed and decide their working status autonomously.
Meanwhile, general delivery services are also available as usual on this day. Delivery workers are classified as "special employment workers," not regular employees, and continue their delivery duties as usual.

However, in the case of post offices, counter services operate normally, but the collection and delivery of general and special mail are suspended. Delivery services are only carried out at some regional post offices that have contracts with external delivery workers.
