SH Urban Research Institute "Public Rental Housing Community Facilities Should Be Opened"
SH Corporation Announces 2019 Research Achievements of SH Urban Research Institute
Including 'Waiting List Management Plan' and 'Expansion Plan for Purchased Rental Housing Supply'
"We Will Do Our Best to Realize Spatial Welfare Beyond Housing Welfare"
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] A study has found that community facilities in public rental housing should evolve into spatial welfare facilities accessible to local residents.
Seoul Housing and Communities Corporation (SH Corporation) announced on the 28th that it will actively reflect various research results conducted last year by the SH Urban Research Institute into its policies.
Among the research results, a study on supplying and operating community facilities in public rental housing as spatial welfare facilities stands out. The SH Research Institute pointed out that limiting the use of community facilities in rental housing to residents only could lead to operational difficulties. Dr. Seungjoo Kim, the lead researcher, stated, “For rental housing community facilities to be reborn as local community facilities, supply considering regional characteristics, long-term utilization perspectives, and operation based on private cooperation are necessary,” and proposed that “community facilities supplied together with public rental housing should be provided as ‘community-linked spatial welfare facilities.’”
There was also a proposal regarding the operation plan of a waiting list system where applicants for public rental housing only need to apply once, and their move-in is determined according to their order on the list. Currently, public rental housing has many types, each with different eligibility and selection methods, making it difficult for consumers to understand. Additionally, recruitment is conducted only at specific times for each type, so those unaware of the recruitment information cannot apply, and due to limited supply, those who fail must repeatedly apply, causing significant inconvenience.
Other research outcomes were announced in various fields aimed at stabilizing housing for Seoul citizens and solving urban problems, including studies on expanding the supply of purchased rental housing and revitalizing urban-type housing supply targeting commercial and semi-residential areas within 350 to 800 meters of subway stations.
