Mark Calcavecchia (USA) shared a story on the PGA Tour podcast on the 28th (Korean time) about how he "earned $300,000 thanks to Tiger Woods." It was about the Tour Championship, the final fourth round of the playoffs (PO) introduced in 2007. Calcavecchia, then 47 years old, kept performing well and faced Woods in the final group on the last day. However, by the final 18th hole, it had become impossible to overcome an 8-stroke deficit.
Calcavecchia had a 2.4m par putt left to maintain a tie for second place. At that moment, Woods slowly approached and said, "This is an important putt. Take your time and make it." He eventually succeeded with the par putt and received $619,500. If he had missed, he would have dropped to a tie for third place ($409,500). That meant $300,000 (about 370 million KRW) was at stake for one stroke. Calcavecchia added, "Woods knew the importance of that putt."
Woods completed a dominant victory with an 8-stroke lead (23 under par, 257 strokes), winning a prize of $1.26 million and a PO champion bonus of $10 million, hitting a 'jackpot' of $11.26 million. Despite skipping the first playoff event, The Barclays, he tied for second at the second event, the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then won back-to-back titles at the third event, the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship, drawing even more spotlight. Calcavecchia and Jack Johnson (USA) tied for second place.
