Gyeongnam Province Invests 5.7 Billion KRW This Year in Pet and Stray Animal Protection Projects
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 28th that it plans to invest a total of 5.75 billion KRW in seven animal protection projects this year to actively respond to the rapid increase in companion animals and pet owners, as well as the occurrence of abandoned animals.
The main projects include ▲ 2 billion KRW for the Companion Animal Support Center construction project ▲ 1.5 billion KRW for the Animal Protection Center installation support project ▲ 460 million KRW for the Companion Animal Park construction project ▲ 1.22 billion KRW for the Animal Protection Center operation support ▲ 570 million KRW for adoption costs of abandoned and lost animals, neutering surgery costs for stray cats, and support for rescue and relief of abandoned animals.
Gyeongsangnam-do will provide 8 billion KRW over three years to Miryang City for the Companion Animal Support Center construction project. To improve protection conditions for abandoned and lost animals and promote adoption, 1.5 billion KRW will be provided for the installation of a directly managed abandoned animal protection center in Tongyeong City. For the Companion Animal Park construction project in Geoje City, selected through the Gyeongnam-type resident participation budget contest, 460 million KRW will be supported.

The province also plans to provide 570 million KRW to encourage adoption of abandoned and lost animals through adoption fee support, neutering surgery cost support to control the stray cat population, and rescue and relief expenses for abandoned animals. Due to the increase in companion animals, the number of abandoned animals in Gyeongsangnam-do rose from 6,596 in 2016 to 14,203 last year.
