Boseong-gun, Sweating It Out Helping Rural Areas Amid COVID-19 Labor Shortage
"Working Together with Residents: Increasing Hands and Sharing Difficulties"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Yong-chul] Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do is actively engaged in volunteer activities to help alleviate the suffering of farmers facing labor shortages due to the prolonged COVID-19 crisis.
According to Boseong-gun on the 27th, following last week's labor assistance with thinning kiwi flower buds and tea leaf picking, kiwi male flower picking work was carried out on the 27th.
The work took place from 8 a.m. at a kiwi farm in Joseong-myeon, with about 40 Boseong-gun public officials, including County Governor Kim Cheol-woo, participating. Despite the high temperatures inside the vinyl greenhouse, the officials diligently worked and sweated profusely.
Lee Jae-min, a representative of the farm, said, "This work requires a lot of hands and is time-sensitive, so I was worried about disruptions due to labor shortages, but the county coming out to help was a great support."
Governor Kim Cheol-woo emphasized, "The difficulties of the residents are the difficulties of the entire county. Although there are many economic and social challenges including COVID-19, Boseong-gun will always overcome hardships together with its residents."
Meanwhile, this work is part of the process to obtain male pollen necessary for kiwi pollination. The pollen collected from the male flowers is used to pollinate female plants to increase fruit set rates.
