[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Tae-in] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 27th that four projects from five consortia were selected in this year’s ‘Hologram Core Technology Development’ public contest organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, securing 106.5 billion KRW in national funding over four years.

The Hologram Core Technology Development project passed the preliminary feasibility study in June last year, and since January, 15 technology development projects were publicly solicited, with the final selection made this time.

Jeonbuk Province will lead the implementation of four selected projects, including the ‘Development of High-Efficiency Hologram HUD (Head Up Display) Technology for Commercial Vehicles.’

Although the hologram preliminary feasibility study passed in June last year, securing hologram technology development projects through nationwide contests was challenging due to a lack of regional capabilities such as related companies.

To address this, from September to December last year, a TF team of industry-academia-research experts was formed and operated to devise a project acquisition strategy by selecting technology development projects linked to Jeonbuk’s key industries and forming optimal consortia for each project.

Additionally, to overcome the limitation of the absence of specialized hologram companies playing a key role in the hologram industry’s development, investment attraction activities such as meetings with metropolitan area companies and individual investment consultations were conducted. As a result, in February, investment agreements were signed with five companies located in the metropolitan area, enabling the strategic formation of consortia suitable for each company’s technology development project.

Furthermore, by focusing on projects that can be linked to commercialization demonstrations (hologram commercial vehicles, virtual museums) promoted in our region and forming consortia accordingly, all selected projects’ outcomes can be demonstrated and yield results in Jeonbuk.

In particular, both technology acquisition and commercialization demonstration for projects such as the ‘Development of High-Efficiency Hologram HUD Technology for Commercial Vehicles’ will be conducted locally, contributing to regional economic development through the restructuring of key industries.

The 15 selected hologram technology development projects will produce results over four years of development, and these outcomes will be demonstrated for commercialization starting in 2022 to increase market entry success rates.

These outcomes will be demonstrated in Jeonbuk and Gyeongbuk, with Jeonbuk focusing on demonstrations related to commercial vehicle HUDs and virtual museums.

Jeonbuk Province and Iksan City recognize the importance of demonstration environments as crucial testbeds for the market entry of technology development outcomes. Starting this year, they plan to establish a demonstration foundation by developing demonstration guidelines and quality standards for demonstration fields. By surveying companies’ demonstration needs and creating customized demonstration environments, they aim to guide the commercialization of technology development outcomes linked to local demonstration fields in Jeonbuk.

To this end, an expert group comprising technology development project selecting institutions, companies, and the Hologram Content Service Center will be formed to thoroughly establish the hologram commercialization demonstration foundation.

Jeon Byeong-soon, Director of the Innovation Growth Industry Bureau of Jeonbuk Province, said, “Following the hologram company investment agreement signed in February, we expect that the selection in this public contest will give momentum to the development of Jeonbuk’s hologram industry,” adding, “Jeonbuk Province will spare no administrative and financial support to become the hub leading South Korea’s hologram industry.”
