Jung Sung-ho: "Will unite the party as one team... Will not seek a position" Announces candidacy for ruling party floor leader
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Jeong Seong-ho, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, officially announced his candidacy for the 21st National Assembly Democratic Party floor leader election to be held on the 7th of next month, stating that "Jeong Seong-ho, who is non-factional, becoming the floor leader will be a signal of reform."
On the morning of the 27th, Jeong held a press conference at the National Assembly and said, "Learning from the failure of the Uri Party 16 years ago, I will lay the foundation for the birth of the 4th Democratic government in two years through integration and innovation alone," emphasizing, "Factions that share policies and visions should be respected and supported, but factional politics based on origin and connections, or even factions centered around specific individuals, should be avoided."
He continued, "Humility, competence, and integration must be the basic principles of floor management. We need a sincere, non-factional, experienced, and rational pragmatist as floor leader," and added, "I will unite the party's strength as the 'Democratic Party One Team'." He also said, "I will not engage in so-called 'position trading.' The line-up practices that harm a healthy party culture must disappear," and stated, "Standing committee assignments and floor personnel appointments will be strictly made based on precedents and principles such as seniority and region, utilizing each member's strengths."
Jeong said, "People around me say that Jeong Seong-ho is neither a core figure of the regime nor a mainstream party leader, so it will be difficult to become floor leader," but he boldly stated, "I firmly believe that Jeong Seong-ho, a 'sincere, non-factional, non-mainstream' candidate, becoming the first ruling party floor leader of the 21st National Assembly will be a strong message of change and a signal of reform sent to the people who created the 180-seat supermajority."
Jeong said, "Many evaluate that the mainstream of our society has shifted from conservative to progressive through this general election. However, I think this is only a partial opinion," adding, "(The people) gave the ruling party a chance because of the national crisis of overcoming COVID-19." He continued, "If innovation, communication, and livelihood are neglected and old practices, unilateralism, and political strife dominate, the whip of angry public sentiment will sharply appear in the presidential election two years later," emphasizing, "We must end politics that incite conflict rather than resolve it for party interests and conflicts. I will show leadership for harmony between the ruling and opposition parties."
