Husband Sentenced to Life Imprisonment in 'Gwanak-gu Mother and Child Murder' Case... Estimated Time of Death Was the 'Decisive Factor' (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] A man in his 40s who was tried on charges of killing his wife and 6-year-old son in a multi-family house in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first trial.
The court concluded that the perpetrator of the case, known as the 'Gwanak-gu mother and child murder case,' was the husband, this man.
The Criminal Division 33 of the Seoul Central District Court (Chief Judge Donghwan Son) sentenced Jo Mo (42), who was indicted on charges including murder, on the afternoon of the 24th, stating, "Considering the defendant's personality and the conflict situation at the time of the crime, and comprehensively reviewing the motive and indirect facts that can be recognized, the prosecution's charges have been proven guilty."
The court stated, "The defendant brutally killed his approximately 5-year-old son under a meticulous plan," and added, "The bereaved families have suffered wounds that can never be healed in their lifetime, and the victims' friends have fallen into deep sorrow, yet the defendant has shown no remorse, so strict responsibility must be imposed."
The key issue in this case's verdict was the time of death of the mother and child.
During the investigation, the police and other authorities identified Jo as a prime suspect, but they could not find clear evidence such as the murder weapon or closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the scene to prove the charges.
However, during the autopsy after death, forensic experts estimated that about four hours had passed since the meal, based on the contents of tomatoes and onions found in the stomachs of the wife, A (42), and son, B (6).
Based on this, the investigation authorities judged that Jo committed the crime, considering that he was at home during that time and there were no signs of external intrusion, and brought him to trial.
The court agreed with the investigation authorities' judgment. The court said, "From a forensic perspective, it is reasonable to consider that the estimated time of death range indicates they were killed while with Jo."
Earlier, Jo was brought to trial on charges of killing his wife A and son B with a weapon on August 21 of last year in a multi-family house in Gwanak-gu, Seoul.
He denied the charges from the investigation stage, claiming, "When I left the house, my wife and child were both alive."
