Gyeonggi-do Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Egg Distribution
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused crackdown on the illegal distribution of eggs.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police announced on the 24th that, due to the rise in egg prices and amendments to related laws increasing the possibility of illegal distribution of edible eggs, they will conduct an intensive investigation into illegal edible egg distribution activities from the 27th of this month to the 8th of next month.
According to the Livestock Products Quality Evaluation Service's Livestock Distribution Information, the consumer price of eggs (special grade, 30 pieces) last month was 5,275 won, an 11.6% increase compared to the same month last year.
The investigation targets approximately 360 locations, including egg distribution and sales businesses within the province (edible egg collection and sales business, egg processing business, edible egg sorting and packaging business), food manufacturing and processing industries that use many eggs (bakery products), and general restaurants.
The main investigation items include ▲ operating without permission or failing to report business activities ▲ distribution of eggs with cracked shells or that are spoiled or deteriorated and unfit for consumption ▲ use or storage of products past their expiration date ▲ violations of preservation and distribution standards (compliance with refrigeration and freezing temperatures) ▲ distribution and sale of eggs for household use without passing through sorting and packaging centers.
In Chi-kwon, head of the provincial special judicial police, emphasized, "With the rise in egg prices and the mandatory sorting and packaging of household eggs, the possibility of illegal edible egg distribution is high," adding, "We will strongly respond to companies that ignore the safety of residents and seek only economic gain through illegal distribution and sales of edible eggs."
