[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] A survey revealed that over 1,000 men and women in their 20s and older enjoy home training at least once a week.
Lotte Members' research platform 'Lime' announced on the 24th that a survey on home training was conducted over two days, from the 2nd to the 3rd of this month, targeting 1,600 men and women aged 20 and above, and the results showed this trend.
Among all respondents, 78.1% (1,250 people) answered that they have exercised at home, and among them, 80.3% (1,003 people) exercised at least once a week. More women (80.0%) had experience with home training than men (76.3%), and by age group, respondents in their 30s had the highest rate at 80.8%. This was followed by those aged 50 and above (79.5%), 40s (77.0%), and 20s (75.3%).
Overall, people in their 40s and 50s exercised at home more frequently than those in their 20s and 30s. When asked about exercise frequency, the most common answer among people in their 20s and 30s was twice a week (26.4%). In contrast, among those in their 40s and 50s and older, the most common response was exercising three or more times a week (29.9%), and the number of respondents who exercised almost daily (14.8%) was higher than in other age groups.
The most common types of exercise done at home were stretching (62.1%) and sit-ups/push-ups (53.3%). Squats/planks, yoga, dance, and Pilates had the highest response rates among people in their 20s. Dumbbell and jump rope exercises were more common among those in their 40s, while equipment exercises such as indoor cycling and treadmills were more frequently done by those aged 50 and above compared to other age groups.
The response rate for having purchased home training equipment was also high at 89.0%. The most purchased items (multiple responses allowed) were yoga mats (50.6%), followed by dumbbells (33.1%), indoor bicycles (29.5%), gym balls (23.7%), and foam rollers (22.6%). The average monthly expenditure on home training was 52,000 KRW.
The reasons for exercising at home included △being able to exercise at the desired time (54.0%) △not having to worry about others (36.9%) △reluctance to go outside due to viruses (32.8%). Regarding exercise methods, the most common response was ‘exercising completely alone’ (48.5%), but a significant number also said they ‘follow exercise videos’ (29.0%) or ‘use exercise apps while working out’ (13.3%).
Jung Ran-sook, head of Lotte Members Data Analytics Division, said, “Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the number of people enjoying exercising at home has noticeably increased. It is expected that untact lifestyles will rapidly settle across daily life, including not only shopping but also exercise, entertainment, and hobbies.”
