Prosecutors Request Extension of Detention for Two Middle School Students in 'Classmate Group Sexual Assault' Case
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution has decided to extend the detention period of two middle school students accused of gang raping a classmate.
The Women and Children Crime Investigation Division of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Jung Eun-hye) announced on the 23rd that it will extend the detention period of two middle school students, including A (15), who were sent on charges of rape causing injury under the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes.
A's detention period was scheduled to expire today, but if the court accepts the prosecution's extension request, the period will be extended until the 3rd of next month.
Under the current Criminal Procedure Act, the detention period of a suspect during the prosecution investigation stage is 10 days, but it can be extended once (up to 10 days) with the court's permission.
The prosecution plans to conduct additional investigations on A and others and indict them next week.
A and the other suspect are accused of giving alcohol to B, a girl attending the same middle school, at a gym in an apartment in Incheon in the early morning of December 23 last year, then dragging her to the stairs near the rooftop and gang raping her, causing injury.
It was investigated that B became the target of the crime because she was close to a junior student who was being bullied by A and the other suspect.
Earlier, B's mother posted a plea for severe punishment for the perpetrators on the Blue House National Petition Board, which received 382,000 supporting comments.
B's mother said, "The perpetrators gave my daughter alcohol in their apartment, saying 'Today, we will kill you,'" and added, "They hit her face, decided the order by playing rock-paper-scissors, and then raped her." She also stated, "As a result of this incident, my daughter received a three-week orthopedic treatment and a two-week gynecological treatment."

This case also sparked controversy over inadequate investigation as the police failed to properly secure some CCTV footage from the apartment showing the suspects' actions during the investigation. The team leader in charge of the case is currently undergoing an internal inspection because of this.
