[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Seon-gap) has been selected for the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Safe Living Design contest and secured a support fund of 350 million KRW to establish crime prevention and public safety environments.
The Safe Living Design project aims to prevent crime through design, focusing on improving residential environments and revitalizing community activities to create safe neighborhoods free from crime.
The selected project site is the residential area of Jayang 4-dong, located between Yangkkochi Street and Yeongdonggyo Alley Market, where residential houses and commercial establishments are mixed, and where aging facilities and safety blind spots require maintenance.
The district plans to enhance residential safety in the project area by ▲ improving the design of lifestyle guidance sign facilities ▲ establishing infrastructure to protect residents in low-rise housing ▲ creating community communication hubs.
Additionally, from the early stages of the project, a resident community will be formed to build a safe neighborhood, conducting project briefings for residents and safety discussions on neighborhood risk factors and improvement measures to reflect residents' opinions in creating a safe community.
Before proceeding with the project, the district conducted a public safety environment diagnosis through a research service last year and established a roadmap aiming to apply CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) to all 15 neighborhoods by June 2022.
To respond to increasing safety demands, a dedicated department called the Living Safety Team was newly established to promote community-based safety projects and build a detailed resident safety system.
