LG Electronics Accelerates Launch of Premium Rollable TV in Q3
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] LG Electronics plans to strengthen its premium competitiveness in the second half of this year through its rollable TV.
According to the electronics industry on the 19th, LG Electronics will launch the 65-inch 'Signature OLED R' rollable TV as early as the third quarter of this year.
The rollable TV is a product that can be rolled up and stored using an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panel, which is highly praised for maximizing the characteristic of emitting light by itself without a backlight.
The industry expects that LG Electronics, having implemented the world's first form factor through the rollable TV, will be able to elevate its global OLED market competitiveness to the next level.
Previously, in September last year, LG Electronics received the 'Conformity Registration' certification for broadcasting and communication equipment suitability evaluation for the rollable TV (product name OLED65R) from the National Radio Research Agency.
Although the rollable TV was expected to be released at the end of last year, it was postponed to the second half of this year due to internal decisions. Some analysts suggest that the release timing was reviewed to promote the spread of OLED TVs while also inspecting to reduce production costs.
In fact, the launch price of the LG rollable TV is expected to be around $60,000 (approximately 70 million KRW). This is considered to secure significant premium price competitiveness compared to the initially anticipated price of around 100 million KRW.

However, concerns about management uncertainties due to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have also emerged ahead of the launch. With major global events such as this year’s Olympics being postponed and canceled one after another due to the COVID-19 outbreak, there are claims that the impact of the infection may continue until the second half of the year, necessitating a reconsideration of the appropriate launch timing.
