28-Year-Old British Mother Dies After Emergency Cesarean Following COVID-19 Diagnosis... 'Baby Survives'
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] A 28-year-old nurse infected with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the UK reportedly lost her life after giving birth to a baby via emergency cesarean section. The baby's health condition is said to be stable.
According to British media including The Guardian on the 15th (local time), Mary Agyapong, a nurse at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in the UK, died on the 12th. She was tested for COVID-19 on the 5th and confirmed positive on the 7th. The hospital reportedly performed a cesarean section to deliver the baby as her health rapidly deteriorated.
Agyapong, who was a full-term pregnant mother, had been caring for patients at the hospital until the 12th of last month, but it is unclear whether she was infected with COVID-19 during this period. However, the hospital where Agyapong was employed stated that safety regulations were followed and that the pregnant Agyapong was not assigned to treat COVID-19 patients.
Although the mother lost her life, the baby is reported to be in good condition. However, it has not been confirmed whether the baby is infected with COVID-19. Agyapong's husband is currently in self-quarantine and unable to care for the baby, according to British media reports.
