Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Selects 6 Universities for Urban Regeneration Specialist Training Programs
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] On the 16th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport selected six universities as ‘Universities for Training Urban Regeneration Specialists’ to play a central role in urban regeneration hub education.
The universities selected as specialist training universities for urban regeneration, which will nurture interdisciplinary talents at the master’s and doctoral levels in the urban regeneration field over the next five years, are Korea University, Inha University, Chungbuk National University, Kyungpook National University, Kyungsung University, and Gwangju University. The final number of successful candidates for the first Urban Regeneration New Deal Youth Internship this year is 300.
The Ministry of Land plans to support each of the six universities with 190 million KRW annually for five years. These universities will implement regionally specialized master’s and doctoral programs and form regional hub education consortia linked with local governments, urban regeneration support centers, and regional research institutes. Through this, they will cultivate local urban regeneration experts.
The regional hub education consortia will collaborate with LH, the education supervising organization, to develop phased standard textbooks and programs for training urban regeneration experts, and establish a system for utilizing urban regeneration personnel, including information and career management plans for linking trained personnel to jobs.
Korea University will provide convergence education through a field-oriented curriculum, on-site education inviting external experts, and a multidisciplinary education system combining engineering and humanities. It plans to build an ecosystem of specialists needed for central urban area and economic base-type New Deal projects as well as private-led projects.
Inha University will offer field-based specialized courses for training experts in port regeneration, old downtown regeneration, industrial complex regeneration, and island regeneration. It will operate a problem-solving urban regeneration studio involving industry-academia-government-research collaboration and support job creation through entrepreneurship education, mentoring, and consulting.
Chungbuk National University will operate specialized training programs divided into three tracks: urban regeneration planner, urban regeneration activist, and urban regeneration project manager. It plans to provide customized education for diverse groups including graduates, public officials, support center staff, NGOs, residents willing to participate, and related aspiring entrepreneurs.
Kyungpook National University will organize two tracks: sustainable regeneration studies and urban regeneration activists, each with curricula focused on theory and practice. It will form a super-regional hub education consortium covering Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do to nurture field-innovative urban regeneration experts who will lead local communities.
Kyungsung University will establish an integrated education system combining urban, finance and economy, governance, culture and arts, and architecture and design fields, introduce capstone design education integrating theory, practice, and monitoring, and activate a master’s program internship system linked with partner institutions.
