Lumbar Disc Herniation Treated with Dochim... Clinical Evidence Confirmed
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] A study has shown that the new acupuncture therapy called Dochim (刀針) treatment improves symptoms of lumbar disc herniation. This is the first clinical study conducted on patients with lumbar disc herniation, and it is expected to influence the activation of Dochim treatment.
On the 16th, the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine announced the joint research results of Dr. Changhyun Han's clinical medicine research team and Professor Youngil Kim's team at Daejeon University Korean Medicine Hospital.
The research team conducted a clinical study on the effect of Dochim, a new acupuncture therapy combining acupuncture needles and surgical blades, on improving symptoms of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (lumbar disc herniation). This is the first clinical study to investigate the efficacy of Dochim. New acupuncture therapy refers to a novel treatment method developed by combining various approaches such as drugs, physical therapy, and surgery based on both traditional Korean medicine and Western anatomical and physiological knowledge.
The research team compared the efficacy of Dochim treatment with general acupuncture treatment in improving lumbar disc herniation. A total of 146 patients aged 19 to 70 with lumbar disc herniation were divided into a Dochim treatment group and a general acupuncture treatment group, and four sessions were conducted over two weeks, with the results analyzed.
Participants reported greater pain improvement with Dochim treatment (32.84% improvement) compared to general acupuncture treatment (13.94% improvement). Improvements in functional disability (Dochim 38.26%, general acupuncture 21.98%) and quality of life index (Dochim 8.36%, general acupuncture 6.57%) were also rated higher for Dochim treatment. In particular, the range of motion of the lumbar joints showed significantly better improvement with Dochim treatment (10.21%) compared to general acupuncture treatment (0.39%). Safety evaluations of Dochim treatment indicated it was as safe as general acupuncture treatment.
