Let's Develop COVID-19 Treatments... Government Also Supports Research Infrastructure
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] The government is stepping up support for government research infrastructure to develop treatments and vaccines for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
On the 16th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has decided to fully mobilize the capabilities of the scientific research community to support the "COVID-19 Treatment and Vaccine Development Pan-Government Support Group."
At 10 a.m. on the same day, Jeong Byeong-seon, the 1st Vice Minister, held an emergency meeting with heads of scientific research institutions at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The meeting discussed ways to support the research infrastructure of scientific research institutions for the development of COVID-19 treatments and vaccines.
To develop treatments and vaccines, institutional support such as rapid clinical trials and approvals by the government is necessary, but practical research infrastructure support, such as animal testing models, is also required.
The heads of government-funded research institutes and the directors of the four major science and technology institutes who attended the meeting shared the current status of research related to treatment and vaccine development. They also agreed to pool their efforts and mobilize all available resources to support the newly formed pan-government support group. The government plans to launch the "COVID-19 Treatment and Vaccine Development Pan-Government Support Group," co-led by the Ministers of Science and ICT and Health and Welfare.
