Significant Decrease in 'Fire and Casualty Damage' in Jeonnam Region in Q1 This Year Compared to Last Year

According to the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters (Chief Ma Jaeyoon) on the 13th, an analysis of the fire status in the province for the first quarter of this year showed that the number of fire occurrences and casualties decreased by 21.8% and 43.8%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
In the first quarter of this year, 741 fires occurred, with 27 casualties (13 deaths and 14 injuries), and property damage was estimated at 10.1 billion KRW.
By type of damage, fires in forest areas, residential facilities, and outdoor locations decreased by a total of 207 cases compared to last year. Casualties decreased by a total of 21 people in forest areas, outdoor locations, and sales/business facilities, in that order.
Although the total number of fires and casualties decreased, the number of deaths caused by forest fires remained the same as last year, with three deaths.
The causes of fires were mostly due to carelessness such as garbage burning at 59% (437 cases), followed by electrical causes at 19.4% (144 cases), mechanical causes at 9.2% (68 cases), and unknown causes at 7% (52 cases).
By location, non-residential facilities accounted for 226 cases (30.5%), residential facilities 165 cases (22.3%), outdoor areas including garbage 141 cases (19%), and forest areas 122 cases (16.5%), in that order.
By city and county, Suncheon City recorded the highest number with 74 cases (10%), followed by Naju City with 53 cases (7.2%), Yeosu City with 49 cases (6.6%), and Yeongam County with 45 cases (6.1%).
Property damage was highest in industrial facilities such as warehouses and animal/plant facilities at 58% (5.9 billion KRW), followed by forest areas at 13.6% (1.3 billion KRW), residential facilities at 11.6% (1.1 billion KRW), and lodging and sales/business facilities at 4.2% (400 million KRW), confirming that industrial facility fire damage was significant.
