Hyundai Mobis Expands India Research Center Specializing in Future Car Software
Additional Second Research Hub Established Near Current India Institute
Strengthening Global R&D Collaboration Centered on Korea with North America, Europe, India, and China
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] Hyundai Mobis is expanding its India research center, which conducts automotive software (SW) development and verification. This move aims to elevate its status as a specialized automotive SW research institute and strengthen its global R&D collaboration system.
On the 13th, Hyundai Mobis announced that it will establish a second research base near the existing India research center located in the IT complex in Hyderabad, India. This is to reinforce the development and safety assurance of automotive SW, where demand has been increasing exponentially.
The India research center is a key part of Hyundai Mobis’s global R&D network collaboration system, which includes the Mabuk Technology Research Center in Korea, as well as centers in the United States, Germany, and China. Currently, it employs the largest number of experts among the four overseas research centers, with over 700 professionals. It is responsible for the development and verification of vehicle electronic components such as IVI (In-Vehicle Infotainment) applications, Airbag Control Units (ACU), Motor Electric Brake (MEB5), and AUTOSAR platforms.
Hyundai Mobis plans to secure development capabilities and improve working conditions through the expansion of the second base. The India research center has been increasing its workforce by 10-20% annually due to efforts to secure excellent local SW talent, making additional space necessary in the mid to long term. Hyundai Mobis also intends to strengthen local research activities related to future autonomous driving SW development.
At the existing first base, SW verification and development for mass-produced products such as IVI, chassis control units, and ACU, as well as customized product development for local Indian customers, will continue. The newly expanded second base will focus on developing control logic for autonomous driving and parking, as well as recognition algorithms for autonomous driving cameras, radar, and LiDAR sensors. Along with developing various control logics to support mass production development, the strategy is to improve the accuracy of autonomous driving sensor data through deep learning-based image recognition algorithms and signal processing algorithm development.
They will also develop SW performance enhancement tools to increase the reliability of autonomous driving SW. First, they will build a database of image recognition algorithm training data through PC-based virtual environment simulations that mimic various driving situations. Efficient analysis of radar and LiDAR sensor data is expected to advance autonomous driving control algorithms.
The expansion of the India research center is also expected to strengthen the global R&D network collaboration system centered on Korea. Each overseas research center plays a specialized R&D role by region. The North America research center is responsible for the advanced development of autonomous driving element technologies such as automatic lane change logic and driver status judgment logic. The European research center focuses on developing core algorithms for autonomous driving, including camera and radar sensors, while the China research center handles global OE customized product development. The Mabuk research center acts as the R&D headquarters, establishing the company’s technology development roadmap and strategy. The total number of researchers across all centers reaches approximately 5,000.
