Geumcheon-gu, Wildfire Monitoring Using Drones
In March, a business agreement was signed with a private drone company for wildfire prevention and monitoring... Smart wildfire prevention and monitoring possible without expert personnel or budget... Conducting 3-5 wildfire prevention and monitoring activities daily, each 15 minutes, until May
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) has launched smart wildfire monitoring activities using drones for the first time among Seoul's autonomous districts in response to the dry spring season.
Every year, around the Cheongmyeong and Hansik periods, the number of hikers and visitors to the mountains increases, leading to simultaneous outbreaks of large and small wildfires nationwide.
In particular, a wildfire occurred in Suraksan, Nowon-gu last March, mobilizing about 1,500 personnel including firefighters, police, district office, and Korea Forest Service staff, along with 55 firefighting vehicles. Due to dry weather and strong winds, an area exceeding approximately 660㎡ was burned.
Recognizing the importance of proactive wildfire prevention, the district signed a business agreement on March 18 with a private drone specialist company to overcome the limitations of insufficient wildfire patrol and prevention personnel by utilizing drones. Using drones enables smart wildfire monitoring and prevention tasks without the need for specialized personnel and budget.
The drones operated for wildfire prevention are equipped with speakers capable of broadcasting wildfire prevention messages, allowing extensive preventive activities deep within forests where personnel cannot reach.
Additionally, videos captured by the drones enable early detection and suppression of wildfires.
Earlier, on April 4, the district conducted smart wildfire prevention and monitoring activities using drones at Hoamsan in Geumcheon-gu. Until May, the wildfire caution period in spring, the district plans to carry out wildfire prevention campaigns along with 3 to 5 daily drone flights, each lasting 15 minutes, for wildfire prevention and monitoring.
Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, stated, “We will strive to establish Geumcheon as an autonomous district leading advanced technology and achieving ZERO forest disasters through smart forest disaster prevention activities using unmanned aerial vehicle drones, the innovation engine of the 4th industrial revolution.”
