Gwangju Seo-gu Distributes 'Dementia Relief Packages' to Elderly Living Alone
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Daeseok) announced on the 7th that on the 6th, they distributed ‘Dementia Safety Knock Knock’ packages to 248 households of dementia patients living alone or elderly couples registered at the Dementia Safety Center.
The packages were prepared to minimize the care gap for dementia elderly caused by the suspension of Dementia Safety Center programs to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The packages consisted of nutritional supplements, soy milk, instant porridge, seasoned seaweed, and other food items to take care of the elderly’s health, as well as learning tools such as puzzles, coloring notebooks, and colored pencil sets so that dementia patients can consistently continue cognitive rehabilitation programs at home.
Additionally, COVID-19 prevention guideline leaflets, health masks, and hand sanitizing tissues were included to ensure that the elderly take thorough precautions against COVID-19.
To protect the health-vulnerable dementia elderly and minimize face-to-face contact, the packages will be delivered via doorstep service after prior notification calls from center staff.
Furthermore, the Seo-gu Dementia Safety Center is carefully monitoring the health status of about 1,000 registered dementia elderly in the district through regular welfare calls, checking for any suspected COVID-19 symptoms. At the same time, they provide emotional support and offer assistance through visits or coordination with other departments when necessary.
A representative of the Seo-gu Dementia Safety Center said, “We will strive to prepare various measures to minimize the care gap for dementia elderly who may feel increasingly isolated due to COVID-19,” and added, “We will continue to devote ourselves to managing dementia patients more diligently.”
