The Future of Humans Seen Through the Future of Social Robots
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] How will social robots, which can perceive objects and engage in social interactions, change human life? The Ministry of Science and ICT published a booklet titled "The Future of Social Robots" on the 7th, detailing the impact social robot technology will have on society as a whole.
This booklet contains the results of a technology impact assessment derived through the Technology Impact Assessment Committee, which includes experts from technology, humanities, and social fields, a citizen forum composed of general citizens, and a public online opinion channel.
Social robots are robots characterized by their ability to recognize users and environments, judge appropriate actions according to given situations, learn, and express social behaviors.
While social robots attract much attention as robots performing social functions traditionally considered unique to humans, there are also potential risks such as excessive dependence and security incidents like personal information leaks. Additionally, it is necessary to consider legal responsibility in case of accidents caused by social robots.
This booklet explores various issues that may arise from social robots and offers policy recommendations.
Lee Seokrae, Director of Performance Evaluation Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "Social robot technology is expected to be widely utilized due to changes in social structure and will become deeply embedded in our daily lives. Therefore, we conducted a technology impact assessment to preliminarily review the ripple effects on society as a whole. We hope this booklet will serve as an opportunity to lead broad social discussions, including reflections on human uniqueness."
