UrinNet Selected as Lead Institution for Next-Generation Optical Communication System R&D by Ministry of Science and ICT
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Woorinet announced on the 7th that it has been selected as the lead developer for the Ministry of Science and ICT's (MSIT) "16 Tbps-class Packet Optical Transport Network (POTN) System Technology Development Project."
The scale of this project is a total of 8 billion KRW, including corporate contributions, and development will be pursued in collaboration with domestic related companies such as the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and Kowiver, aiming for completion by December 2022. Woorinet plans to promote the commercialization of the 16 Tbps-class POTN and expand supply across various business areas, including ultra-connected intelligent wired networks, nationwide backbone network advancement projects, integrated wired and wireless network service construction, and public network enhancement.
MSIT is conducting new support projects such as the "IITP 2020 1st Information and Communication & Broadcasting Technology Development Project" to realize ICT research and development (R&D) policies and develop future-leading core source technologies that can meet private sector demand. In the second half of last year, the "5G+ ICT R&D Technology Roadmap" selected "Transport-SDN-based 16T POTN Commercial Technology" as a key investment direction in the R&D field of long-distance communication networks encompassing 5G and the forthcoming 6G.
The 16 Tbps-class Packet Optical Transport Network (POTN) system technology will integrate and provide services including "high-capacity and highly scalable optical transmission, time-deterministic uninterrupted networking, hierarchical integration, intelligent network management, and ultra-high-speed encrypted transmission including quantum cryptography." It is expected to reach world-class levels as a high-capacity backbone solution to accommodate the rapidly increasing demand for integrated wired and wireless networks.
Woorinet plans to combine hierarchical integration and service-specific network slicing functions with enhanced management features such as T-SDN intelligent control One Click Provisioning, fault analysis, and prevention. By completing the "16T next-generation POTN system," which features bandwidth guarantee and hierarchical integration, it aims to enhance national informatization competitiveness by accommodating ultra-high-speed quantum cryptographic communication.
