Publication of Archaeological Excavation Report Including Restoration of Ancient Ironmaking Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] The National Jungwon Cultural Heritage Research Institute announced on the 6th that it has published four reports summarizing recent research achievements, including the restoration of ancient ironmaking technology. The reports are titled "Comprehensive Report on the Restoration Research of Ironmaking Technology in the Jungwon Region," "Results Report on the 5th and 6th Ancient Ironmaking Technology Restoration Experiments," "Comprehensive Report on the Establishment of Standards and Revitalization Plans for Traditional Ironware Manufacturing Methods," and "Excavation Report on the Site Surrounding the Chilcheung Stone Pagoda in Tapyeong-ri, Chungju." The "Comprehensive Report on the Restoration Research of Ironmaking Technology in the Jungwon Region" includes results from ironmaking site excavations, natural scientific analysis and interpretation of ironmaking samples, and the restoration process of ironmaking experiments conducted from 2015 to last year. The "Results Report on the 5th and 6th Ancient Ironmaking Technology Restoration Experiments" records the outcomes of smelting (製鍊: the process of melting ore in a furnace to produce metal), refining (精鍊: the process of extracting and purifying metal from raw materials), and forging (鍛冶: the process of heating and hammering iron) experiments conducted in 2017 and 2018. The "Comprehensive Report on the Establishment of Standards and Revitalization Plans for Traditional Ironware Manufacturing Methods" is a compilation of literature related to traditional ironware and includes an analysis of iron product manufacturing techniques used in Joseon Dynasty architecture. The "Excavation Report on the Site Surrounding the Chilcheung Stone Pagoda in Tapyeong-ri, Chungju" presents excavation results from the Tapyeong-ri site in Chungju. It confirms information on stone embankment structures presumed to be embankment facilities, as well as relics and artifacts from the Three Kingdoms period and the Unified Silla period, such as roof tiles.
