Confirmed Cases Reported in 14 Regions Centered Around Capital Moscow
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] In Russia, the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has exceeded 5,000, centered around the capital, Moscow.
On the 5th (local time), according to local media including TASS news agency, the Russian government announced that 658 new confirmed cases were reported in 14 regions including Moscow in one day. As a result, the cumulative number of confirmed cases reached 5,389 across 79 regions, surpassing 5,000. Two additional deaths were reported, bringing the total to 45.
The new confirmed cases were concentrated in the capital, Moscow. There were 536 newly confirmed patients in Moscow, bringing the total infections to 3,893. In the Moscow Oblast near Moscow, 45 confirmed cases were reported, and 20 cases were reported in Saint Petersburg.
Sergey Sobyanin, Mayor of Moscow, explained the increase in infections in an interview with Russian TV, stating, "Moscow belongs to the most dangerous regions," and "many people have passed through the city or returned after visiting foreign countries." He added, "We have mobilized city hospitals to the maximum and currently secured about 20,000 hospital beds."
Meanwhile, it is reported that President Vladimir Putin is not commuting to the Kremlin but is working remotely from his residence in the Novo-Ogaryovo area on the outskirts of Moscow.
