On the first day of the official election campaign, at 2:30 p.m. on the 2nd, the Open Democratic Party held a meeting at the Mokpo Sinan Beach Hotel, where party leader Lee Geun-sik, Secretary-General and Supreme Council Member Park Hong-ryul, co-chairmen of the joint election committee Choi Kang-wook and Kim Jin-ae, and about 20 proportional representation candidates including Kim Ui-gyeom and Choi Kang-wook appealed for support from local residents.
Party leader Lee Geun-sik said in his greeting, "I consider the visit to Mokpo a political pilgrimage," and added, "Many Open Democratic Party lawmakers who inherit the spirits of former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun must be elected."
Supreme Council Member and Secretary-General Park Hong-ryul also said in his greeting, "We ask for support for the Open Democratic Party so that the spirit of former Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun and the reforms of the Moon Jae-in administration can be completed," and added, "We will make sure the Open Democratic Party can play a role in the development of Mokpo."
Supreme Council Member Son Hye-won attracted attention by saying, "The reason I am not running as a candidate in this election is to keep my promise to build a museum in Mokpo to exhibit artifacts," and added, "If Open Democratic Party lawmakers are elected, they will be able to consider Mokpo as their hometown."
After the meeting, Open Democratic Party officials met citizens at the Mokpo Free Market and visited the Mokpo New Port to hold a memorial event for the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster.
