Taiwan, Successful in COVID-19 Prevention, Donates 10 Million Masks to Europe and the United States
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen: "The Global Pandemic Won't End Until It Truly Ends"
Taiwan's Status Elevated After Successful First Phase of COVID-19 Prevention
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Taiwan has announced that it will provide 10 million masks to Europe and the United States, where COVID-19 cases are rapidly increasing.
According to foreign media on the 1st, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen stated, "Taiwan has the COVID-19 outbreak under control, but if the global pandemic does not end, we cannot see the end." She added, "Now, on the international stage, we must fight this disease together with other countries. To this end, Taiwan will provide 10 million masks to (Europe and the United States)."
A Taiwanese government official said that the amount of aid currently being discussed with the European Union (EU) is expected to exceed the 2.2 million masks promised by China. Previously, China had pledged to provide 2 million surgical masks, 200,000 N95 masks, and 50,000 testing kits.
The EU welcomed Taiwan's willingness to provide support. The EU also stated that the supplies promised by China will be prioritized for countries most affected by COVID-19, such as Italy, within a few days.
Taiwan has long been ignored by the international community due to China's emphasis on the "One China" principle. However, Taiwan's exemplary quarantine measures regarding COVID-19 have changed its status. Taiwan has reported 322 confirmed COVID-19 cases and only 5 deaths.
European agencies are making efforts to increase dialogue channels with Taiwan and learn from Taiwan's expertise in responding to COVID-19.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, Taiwan banned the export of masks overseas and encouraged manufacturers to increase production by providing incentives. Thanks to these efforts, Taiwan has raised its daily mask production to about 13 million.
