Jangseong-gun Provides Technical Support to Prevent Cold Damage in Rapidly Growing Crops
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Gil-su] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 31st that it has undertaken thorough preemptive management to prevent damage to open-field crops such as fruit trees and field crops caused by sudden abnormal low temperatures in spring.
The spring "abnormal low temperature phenomenon" particularly damages the flower buds of fruit trees entering the blooming period. April to May is the flowering season for major fruit trees such as apples, pears, and peaches, and abnormal low temperatures during this period are extremely detrimental to fruit setting.
This year, the growth of major crops has progressed rapidly due to warm temperatures and adequate rainfall, and according to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, a cold snap is expected in early to mid-April, raising concerns about low-temperature damage more than ever.
Accordingly, Jangseong-gun is providing on-site support to minimize low-temperature damage to fruit trees and other crops by focusing on fruit tree cultivation areas and implementing water spraying using micro-sprinkler devices and the use of wind fans to prevent temperature drops within orchards.
In addition, for open-field crops such as garlic, onions, and barley, the amount of fertilizer is reduced to prevent excessive growth, and technical support is provided to maintain the temperature inside greenhouses above 10℃ to prevent low-temperature damage to facility-grown tomatoes and pepper seedlings under nursery.
Furthermore, starting this year, a pilot service is being operated targeting 251 farms cultivating fruit trees, providing customized weather services and cultivation information management measures tailored to farm conditions, and a pilot project is underway to reduce low-temperature damage using eco-friendly combustion materials.
