Mapo-gu Supports 1,500 Companion Plants for Elderly Living Alone Isolated by COVID-19... Distributing 1,500 Seedling Pots Including Tulips, Daffodils, and Hyacinths Until the 18th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mr. A (78), a single elderly person living in Sinsu-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, has been in a state of semi-isolation since February due to the COVID-19 situation. He feels like he is living on an isolated island, unable to visit the welfare center, which was his only source of joy.
Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) is providing companion plants to help alleviate depression for single elderly people who feel more socially isolated and depressed due to COVID-19.
According to a survey by Seoul City, 93% of elderly people living alone responded that raising companion plants helps relieve loneliness.
The district recently received a donation of 1,500 potted seedlings of companion plants such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and narcissus from Goyang Master Gardeners (President Song Gichang) affiliated with the Goyang Agricultural Technology Center.
The district plans to deliver these companion plants to 1,500 single elderly people by the 18th through 110 life support workers from the Mapo Senior Welfare Center and the Mapo Senior Care Integrated Center, which are carrying out customized care services for the elderly.
Goyang Master Gardeners is an organization with about 70 members who have been volunteering as talent-sharing activists in urban horticulture since 2015, visiting nursing homes, social welfare facilities, and apartment complexes to provide seedling pots, repot plants, and perform other volunteer activities.

Yudonggyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Although these are difficult and challenging times, I hope the single elderly people find comfort in raising companion plants and overcome this situation well. We will also do our best to ensure there are no gaps in the conversation services and welfare counseling services currently being provided by the district.”
