Mapo-gu and Hancom have signed a business agreement to promote and expand the distribution of the Mapo brand typeface.
View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (District Mayor Yudonggyun) signed a business agreement with Hancom on the 4th to promote and spread the Mapo brand typeface.
The agreement includes providing the nine types of Mapo brand typefaces developed by Mapo-gu last year to users of Hancom Office 2018 and 2020 versions operated by Hancom.
To this end, both parties agreed to mutually cooperate for future supply and usage contracts of the Mapo brand typeface.
According to the agreement, Mapo-gu will provide the self-developed Mapo brand typeface to Hancom free of charge, and Hancom will distribute the typeface non-exclusively through all products (both paid and free software/systems/services) it offers.
The Mapo brand typeface is a unique local typeface developed last year as part of the 'Typeface Designer Youth Job Creation Project,' which provided unemployed youth with job opportunities, career formation, and capacity-building chances.
Nine young participants in the project developed one typeface each over 11 months through practical experience and career coaching, and completed copyright registration in November last year. The typefaces express the characteristics of the Mapo area, including Hongdae, Mapo Naru Saeujeot, and Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery.
With this agreement, the district expects widespread distribution of the Mapo brand typeface through Hancom Office programs, which hold a significant share in the domestic office environment.
The district aims to create an environment where anyone can use the Mapo brand typeface without copyright burdens, and especially plans to focus on promoting its use by small business owners for design and signboard production amid the difficult economic conditions caused by COVID-19.
Currently, all nine Mapo brand typefaces can be downloaded and used by anyone through the Mapo-gu website (www.mapo.go.kr).
