[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] As COVID-19 spreads, causing a mask shortage, residents have taken up sewing machines to help vulnerable groups, drawing attention.
On the 8th, according to Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, members of the Seochang-dong Community Security Council (Chairperson Kang Mija) decided to produce masks with sewing machines for vulnerable groups and distribute them.
The Community Security Council is a pure resident organization at the neighborhood level that helps neighbors in difficult living conditions and addresses various welfare needs of residents.
Since the end of last month, the council members have been preparing to make masks and began full-scale production on the 6th, gathering at the Seochang-dong Community Center even on Saturdays and Sundays to make masks.
They are divided into teams of five, coordinating tasks such as pattern making, cutting, sewing, threading ear loops, and finishing.
The quantity produced in just three days is about 500 masks.
The first target quantity of 4,000 masks will be immediately distributed to about 400 vulnerable households, and additional production will begin if necessary.
