8 out of 10 Koreans Support 'Cancellation of Shincheonji Corporation'

View original image[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] As the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced its intention to revoke the corporate registration of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji), nearly 8 out of 10 citizens expressed support for the cancellation of Shincheonji's corporate status.
On the 5th, polling agency Realmeter, commissioned by tbs, revealed that 77.7% of respondents were in favor of revoking Shincheonji's corporate registration. In contrast, 15.5% opposed it, and 6.8% were unsure or did not respond.
Detailed results showed that the majority supported the cancellation across all regions, age groups, and ideological leanings.
Notably, in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, which had a high number of COVID-19 cases, 87.6% supported the cancellation, a higher rate than other areas. Following were Daejeon, Sejong, Chungcheong, Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gwangju, Jeolla, and Seoul in descending order of support.
By age group, those in their 40s showed the highest support, followed by those in their 50s, 30s, and 20s.
Regarding political party support, the highest approval came from Democratic Party supporters, while 69.0% of United Future Party supporters also favored the cancellation.
However, among conservatives, opposition was higher at 21.2%, above the average. Conservative support stood at 70.5%, lower than the overall average.
