[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] China has successfully performed the world's first lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient.
According to the Global Times on the 2nd, Chinese medical staff successfully conducted a lung transplant surgery on a COVID-19 patient in Jiangsu Province on the 29th of last month. The surgery was performed by lung transplant specialist Professor Chen Jingyu, Vice Director of Wuxi People's Hospital, and was successfully completed after five hours in a negative pressure operating room.
Professor Chen explained, "The COVID-19 patient who underwent the lung transplant surgery woke up normally, is in a stable condition, and lung function is good." He added, "The next step is to closely monitor the patient and implement measures to prevent rejection and infection following the lung transplant," stating, "This will be a highly advanced case of COVID-19 infection treatment."
The patient who received the lung transplant was diagnosed with COVID-19 on January 26 and was undergoing treatment, but lung function had been severely damaged. Fortunately, lungs were donated by a brain-dead donor and transported to Wuxi, where the hospital is located, via high-speed train in seven hours, after which the lung transplant surgery was immediately performed.
