Government Strengthens Investigation Cooperation on 'Corona Voice Phishing'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyo-jin] Financial authorities have decided to strengthen investigative cooperation systems with the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and others to prevent voice phishing (telephone financial fraud) exploiting concerns about the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The Financial Services Commission announced on the 1st that this policy was established during a conference call (non-face-to-face telephone meeting) with related ministries and agencies on the 27th of last month to review the response situation to COVID-19-related voice phishing.
Accordingly, the government plans to prepare comprehensive and systematic countermeasures covering the entire process of voice phishing, including 'prevention - blocking - crackdown and punishment - victim relief.'
Additionally, the government will have financial companies strengthen continuous monitoring through abnormal financial transaction detection systems (FDS) related to COVID-19 voice phishing and respond more strongly with a sense of responsibility for preventing voice phishing and compensating consumer damages.
