SKY Castle Swept Last Year's Viewership Ratings and Online Comments
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Among the dramas and entertainment programs aired last year, the programs that attracted the most public attention in terms of viewership ratings and internet responses were JTBC's ‘SKY Castle’ and tvN's ‘Hotel Del Luna,’ according to an analysis.
The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced the '2019 Broadcast Content Internet Response Survey Results' on the 27th. The KCC summarized the internet responses in South Korea and major overseas countries (China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia) for 131 TV dramas aired domestically last year (69 on terrestrial channels, 39 on CJ affiliates, 23 on general programming PP) and 337 major entertainment programs.
According to the survey results, JTBC's ‘SKY Castle’ and tvN's ‘Hotel Del Luna’ showed high average daily individual viewership ratings and internet responses during the survey period. The viewership ratings were 10.8% and 5.6%, respectively; the average weekly posts during the survey period were 14,700 and 14,240, respectively; and news articles numbered 4,504 and 2,473, respectively.
Looking at viewer posts, ‘SKY Castle’ received positive feedback on speculations about future developments, intergenerational empathy regarding the drama's realism, and praise for the cast's acting skills. ‘Hotel Del Luna’ was analyzed to have drawn positive responses due to the lead actress IU's ‘Jang Man-wol’ Instagram account operation and the OST. The domestic broadcast programs with high viewership ratings last year were KBS2's weekend drama ‘My Only One’ and SBS's entertainment program ‘My Ugly Duckling,’ recording ratings of 18.7% and 8.1%, respectively. However, the KCC reported that the internet responses for these two programs did not meet those levels.

The KCC also conducted surveys on local internet responses to Korean broadcast content in major Hallyu promotion countries?China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia?in June and September, in two phases. In the first survey, China and Thailand showed many responses to tvN's ‘Search: WWW,’ Vietnam to KBS2's ‘Angel's Last Mission: Love,’ and Indonesia to tvN's ‘Arthdal Chronicles.’ In the second survey, all four countries showed many internet responses to tvN's ‘Hotel Del Luna,’ similar to the domestic trend.
