Gwangju University Wins Consecutive Awards at the 'Handicraft Cultural Product Contest'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju University (President Kim Hyukjong) announced on the 26th that Kim Soyoon, a graduate student (master's course) in the Department of Interior Design, won the grand prize at the '2020 Korea Handicraft Cultural Product Contest.'
Kim's entry, 'The Four Seasons of Mudeungsan,' simply stylizes the image of Mudeungsan Mountain for modern living purposes and designed it as a kitchenware set.
The kitchenware set consists of a soban (small tray), tray, three-tiered box, cutlery holder, cup coaster, and candy bowl, mainly made of garin and ebony wood.
On the ebony, laser engraving was used to carve Seoseokdae, reeds, and Mudeungsan watermelon, expressing the four seasons of Mudeungsan with a sense of weight.
In particular, 'The Four Seasons of Mudeungsan' enabled mass production using advanced equipment such as laser engravers and was praised for well expressing the uniqueness of Gwangju by handcrafting in line with the purpose of the handicraft contest.
Lee Songhaerang (Department of Fashion Jewelry graduate) won the silver prize for the metal craft entry 'Plant.'
Also, Choi Wonhee (1st year), a student in the Department of Interior Design, received a special prize, and second-year students Lee Hyunbin, Yoon Hyunseong, and Jo Seolbin won the special selection. Students Jeong Hojun, Han Saetbyeol (1st year), and Yoon Seobin (2nd year) received honorable mentions.

Meanwhile, the '2020 Korea Handicraft Contest,' promoted as a project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was held under the theme 'Made by Fingertips - Gwangju Uniqueness' with support from the Korea Craft & Design Foundation and Gwangju City. It was organized to discover excellent and creative handicraft cultural products and to promote the development of the craft culture industry by encouraging the creative motivation of artisans.
