The ‘Breakthrough Media Agency’ award, one of the categories in Adweek’s annual ‘Media Agency of the Year’ awards, is given to emerging agencies in their 4th to 6th year that demonstrate excellent operational capabilities and potential for growth, marking them as companies to watch.
According to Adweek, the evaluation criteria for the Breakthrough Media Agency award include campaign management skills and know-how, performance growth, organizational culture, and brand reputation within the industry.
A Canvas representative stated, “Since its founding, we believe the award reflects our continuous expansion of an advertiser portfolio composed of leading global brands, as well as our highly regarded digital expertise encompassing traditional media, online media, programmatic advertising, and data analytics.”
Canvas was established in 2016 as a joint venture between Innocean and Horizon Media, the largest independent media agency in the U.S., to actively enter the global media business. Currently, it operates six regional offices with major bases in LA and New York, including Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, and Denver, employing over 300 local staff.
Canvas provides media agency services to major brand advertisers such as Hyundai-Kia Motors, Heineken, Chicken of the Sea, and Annapurna in the highly competitive North American market, and recently succeeded in acquiring new clients including McDonald’s and Veet America.

An Innocean official said, “It is a very rare achievement for an independent agency to win Adweek’s Breakthrough Media Agency award, which has typically gone to agencies within holding groups over the past few years. This underscores that Canvas’s independent media operation capabilities and digital media expertise are recognized within the industry.”
