[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The conservative opposition party also released a statement calling director Bong Joon-ho's film "Parasite" winning four Academy Awards "a proud moment for the Republic of Korea."
Park Yong-chan, spokesperson for the Liberty Korea Party, sent a congratulatory message on the 10th, saying, "It is a monumental event that showcased the power of Korean cinema and culture to the world."
Spokesperson Park said, "This is welcome news like rain to the Republic of Korea, which has been plunged into stagnation, standstill, and despair due to the Wuhan pneumonia," and added, "I extend my congratulations to the producers, actors, and all those involved in making the film."
He continued, "We hope that Korean films, which have risen prominently in the mainstream global film industry, will become a new driving force of the Korean Wave and bring a fresh breeze to every corner of the world," and stated, "The Korea Party will continue to do its best to prepare and support policies that aid the cultural and artistic fields."
Ji Sang-wook, chief spokesperson of the New Conservative Party, also said in a statement that day, "This is the glory of director Bong Joon-ho and the glory of the Republic of Korea," and expressed "gratitude and praise to director Bong Joon-ho for presenting this miracle to the people."
Chief spokesperson Ji said, "For the first time in the 92-year history of the Academy Awards, an Asian won the Best Original Screenplay, and a non-English language film won the highest honor, Best Picture, which is also an Oscar first. Bong Joon-ho, who made new history at the Oscars, is a great Korean," and added, "Finally, the golden Oscar trophy-printed Korean film posters can be seen worldwide."
