[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Prince Harry and his wife, who declared financial independence after leaving the British royal family, reportedly earned a staggering $1 million (about 1.19 billion KRW) from a single speech at a U.S. investment bank event, according to the British daily The Times on the 8th (local time).
According to local media, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle attended the JP Morgan event held in Miami, Florida, as their first official engagement after declaring independence from the British royal family.
The JP Morgan event is held annually in Miami and is famous for attracting billionaires including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and millions of baseball players.
At this event, Prince Harry spoke in front of an audience of 425 financial professionals and celebrities about how he came to terms with the death of his mother, the late Princess Diana, and the process of giving up his role as a member of the royal family. Duchess Markle also mentioned her love for her husband.
The Guardian reported that the exact appearance fee for Prince Harry and his wife was not confirmed, but The Times and other local media cited statements from PR experts estimating it to be around $1 million.
This amount is about 10 times higher than the appearance fees of other former British ministers or prime ministers.
Former British Prime Minister Theresa May received ?75,500 (about 116 million KRW) for attending the JP Morgan event.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II has requested the royal couple, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, to attend the Commonwealth ceremony (formerly the British colonial federation) held at Westminster Abbey on March 9. The couple is expected to perform their final royal duties with their 10-month-old son, Archie.
Negotiations are currently underway with the royal family regarding the resolution of Prince Harry and his wife’s financial matters, but the issue of whether the couple will be allowed to use the royal brand of Duke and Duchess of Sussex for commercial projects has not yet been resolved.
