View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] LG Uplus has successfully completed Japan's first 5G roaming test among domestic telecom companies for 5G customers attending the Tokyo Summer Olympics this July.
On the 10th, LG Uplus announced that it signed an agreement with KDDI, one of Japan's top three telecom companies, for 5G roaming interworking, and began interworking the two companies' 5G networks. Earlier this month, they completed roaming tests using commercial networks in Japan with 5G smartphones from LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics.
KDDI is preparing to launch its 5G service next month. It has over 92 million subscribers and has been building 5G base stations mainly in major Japanese cities such as Tokyo since last year. The 5G roaming service is expected to be provided after the commercialization of 5G services by Japanese telecom companies at the end of March.
LG Uplus currently offers 5G roaming services in four countries including China, Italy, Switzerland, and Finland. With the start of 5G services in major overseas countries this year, it plans to expand the number of countries offering 5G roaming.
Considering that overseas 5G services are still in the early stages and the number of 5G roaming countries is limited, LG Uplus is running a promotion that allows customers to use 5G data roaming at the same rates as existing LTE roaming charges. LG Uplus 5G users who subscribe to the LTE roaming product 'Zero' plan can use both LTE roaming and 5G roaming without additional costs.
