'Gangneung Also Selected as a Domestic Candidate City for the 2025 ITS World Congress'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 10th that Gangneung City has been selected as the domestic candidate city to host the 2025 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress.
The ITS World Congress is known as the "Transportation Olympics." It began in 1994 in Paris, France, and is considered the world's largest exhibition and academic conference in the field of intelligent transportation systems, held annually rotating among Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
South Korea has successfully hosted the 5th Seoul ITS World Congress (1998) and the 17th Busan ITS World Congress (2010).
At the ‘2025 ITS World Congress Candidate City Selection Evaluation Committee’ held on the 5th, Mayor Kim Han-geun of Gangneung City personally presented Gangneung’s hosting plan. Mayor Kim was recognized for competitiveness by highlighting the successful hosting experience of the 2018 Winter Olympics, excellent tourism resources, and the strong will of the local government.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to form a hosting organizing committee together with Gangwon Province, Gangneung City, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and Korea Intelligent Transport Systems Association, and submit a letter of intent to host to the ITS Asia-Pacific Secretariat within this month.
The organizing committee plans to actively promote the hosting campaign targeting major Asia-Pacific countries with voting rights until the ‘27th ITS World Congress’ scheduled to be held in Los Angeles (LA), USA, this October.
