"Impact of Boycott Movement"... Japan's Agricultural, Forestry, Fisheries, and Food Exports to Korea Decrease by 21% Last Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] According to a report by Nihon Keizai Shimbun on the 7th, the scale of agricultural, forestry, fishery products, and food exports from Japan to Korea last year decreased by 21% compared to the previous year.
According to the report, the total export value of Japan's agricultural, forestry, fishery products, and food last year was 912.1 billion yen. Nihon Keizai stated, "Exports to China and the United States increased, but exports to Hong Kong and Korea decreased, resulting in only a 0.6% increase compared to the previous year," and added, "The target of 1 trillion yen was not achieved."
Japan's exports to Korea amounted to 50.1 billion yen, a 21% decrease compared to the previous year. As Korea-Japan relations deteriorated due to the Japanese government's strengthened export regulations and forced labor issues, a boycott movement against Japanese products arose in Korea, leading to a decrease in exports of Japanese alcoholic beverages and snacks. In 2018, Japan's exports of agricultural, forestry, fishery products, and food to Korea increased by 6.4% compared to the previous year.
Exports to Hong Kong also showed sluggish performance. Last year, Japan's exports of agricultural, forestry, fishery products, and food to Hong Kong were 203.7 billion yen, a 3.7% decrease compared to the previous year. This is interpreted as being affected by the prolonged anti-government protests last year. Exports to Thailand also decreased by 9.2%.
