Quarantine Countermeasures Headquarters, Domestic Occurrence Briefing on the 6th
4 Additional Confirmed Cases... 1234 Contacts
Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus infection, half of the national airline routes between Korea and China have been suspended, and the suspension is expanding to include flights to Hong Kong and Macao. According to the aviation industry, Jeju Air has decided to temporarily suspend its Incheon?Macao route starting from the 7th. Additionally, the Jeju?Hong Kong route will also be suspended from the 19th of this month. Other LCCs such as Jin Air and Air Busan are also expanding the suspension of routes to Chinese-speaking regions outside mainland China. View original image[Asia Economy Reporters Choi Daeyeol, Kim Heungsun] The number of people who have come into contact with patients infected with the novel coronavirus (Wuhan pneumonia) exceeded 1,000 on the 6th. Among them, some were infected and confirmed positive, while others showed no symptoms during the incubation period (up to 14 days) and were released from monitoring. Several people who were tested due to symptoms received negative results. The number of people under quarantine due to contact with existing patients or having symptoms after returning from China was also counted as 1,000.
Patient No. 17 Returned from Singapore, Contacted 188 People in Seoul, Daegu, and Guri
Authorities: "Besides 2 Koreans Attending Local Event, There Are 2 More"
According to the domestic occurrence status compiled by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) on the 6th, the total number of contacts of confirmed patients was 1,234 (cumulative). This figure is as of 9 a.m. on that day and includes contacts from the first patient up to the 17th patient confirmed the previous day. Contacts of the 22nd and 23rd patients confirmed on that day, as well as the 18th to 21st patients confirmed the previous day, have not yet been fully investigated and are therefore excluded.
The newly identified contacts of the 17th patient on that day amounted to 188 people. This patient tested positive after returning from Singapore last month on a business trip and spent nearly two weeks visiting Seoul, Daegu, and Guri, meeting people. The patient also visited several hospitals and clinics near their residence.
The KCDC explained that the 19th patient, confirmed the previous day along with the 17th patient, was at the same event venue in Singapore. Our health authorities have identified that besides these two patients, there were two more Koreans at the same location (Grand Hyatt Hotel, Singapore). One has returned and is under quarantine, while the other attended the local event overseas and has not yet been contacted. Considering that a Malaysian who attended the same event locally was confirmed positive after returning to their country, our health authorities judge that it is highly likely they were exposed to the same source of infection at the event.

Number of Wuhan Entrants with Unknown Location Reduced to 30
Patient No. 23 Confirmed Positive After Local Government and Police Cooperation
The number of people confirmed to be under quarantine measures is 1,000. Contacts of the first patient have completed the monitoring period and have all been released from surveillance. Among contacts, those who test negative after examination are not quarantined. The exact number of those under quarantine among contacts of patients No. 18 to 23 is still being investigated. Including the two additional patients confirmed on the morning of the day, the total number of confirmed cases is 23 (cumulative), with one patient (No. 2) discharged the previous day and one patient (No. 1) scheduled for discharge on the day. The total number of symptomatic individuals under investigation is 862, of whom 693 have been released from quarantine and 169 remain quarantined.
The number of people from Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, subject to a full investigation who cannot be contacted has decreased to 30. This includes 1 Korean and 29 foreigners, down from 76 the previous day. Jeong Eun-kyung, Director of the KCDC, said, "It is somewhat difficult to locate foreigners, but the National Police Agency is tracking them using various investigative methods such as reviewing closed-circuit television (CCTV)." She added, "Local governments are actively managing foreigners whose whereabouts have been confirmed through such channels."
The government has been conducting a full investigation of people who entered from Wuhan between January 13 and 26 to prevent community spread of the novel coronavirus. The subjects include 1,160 Koreans and 1,831 foreigners, totaling 2,991 people. Excluding those who have passed the maximum 14-day incubation period or have left the country, health authorities are monitoring 271 individuals.
On the 6th, with four additional confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection, a notice prohibiting visits and controlling access was posted at the main building of Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno-gu, Seoul, where the 21st patient is known to be hospitalized in an isolation ward. View original imageThrough this full investigation, one Chinese woman whose whereabouts were confirmed the previous day was diagnosed positive on the day. She is the 23rd patient. The Seoul Metropolitan Government identified her location with the cooperation of the National Police Agency. A KCDC official stated, "It has been confirmed that the 23rd patient lived with eight people in Korea. Five of them tested negative, two are currently undergoing tests, and further investigation is needed regarding the onset date, infection route, and contacts."
Meanwhile, following the discharge of patient No. 2 the previous day, patient No. 1, the first confirmed case in Korea, is also scheduled for discharge. Symptoms have improved, and two consecutive tests were negative. Considering the increasing number of infections acquired in countries other than China, such as Thailand and Singapore, quarantine authorities have revised the case definition to allow people who have visited countries with outbreaks within the last two weeks and who have respiratory symptoms or unexplained pneumonia to undergo virus testing.
Previously, testing was guided for those who had visited Hubei Province, China, and had fever or respiratory symptoms, or those who had visited all of China and developed pneumonia. Director Jeong said, "If infections spread through mild cases and the number of infected people increases, the scale of community transmission will grow."
